What to Pack for Your Panchakarma Retreat

Packing for Panchakarma is different from packing for a typical holiday. You need comfortable clothing you do not mind getting oily, your medications in original packaging, and a few personal care essentials. This guide covers everything to bring and what to leave at home.

Clothing

What to Bring

Loose, comfortable clothing is essential. During Panchakarma, your body will be saturated with medicated oils from daily Abhyanga (oil massage), Shirodhara, and other oleation therapies. This oil will transfer to your clothing. Bring items you are comfortable getting stained.

Cotton is ideal for the Indian climate and for oil absorption. Loose cotton trousers, salwar-kameez, kurta pyjamas, or simple cotton loungewear work well. Bring 4 to 5 changes (laundry services are available at the centre). Lightweight, breathable tops that are easy to put on and remove. During treatment, you may change clothes multiple times per day. A light shawl or wrap for cool mornings and evenings. Lonavala is in the hills and mornings can be cool, especially from October to February. Comfortable walking shoes or sandals for the property’s garden paths and walking trails. Flip-flops or slides for moving between your room and the treatment area.

What to Leave at Home

Expensive or delicate clothing that cannot tolerate oil stains. Synthetic fabrics that trap heat and do not breathe. Tight-fitting clothing that restricts circulation (skinny jeans, compression wear). Formal wear. There are no occasions requiring it. Extensive jewellery. Simple pieces are fine, though you will remove rings, bracelets, and necklaces for treatments.

Medications and Health Documents

This is the most important category. Bring all current prescription medications in their original packaging with clear labels showing the medication name, dose, and prescribing doctor. Bring enough supply for your entire stay plus at least 5 extra days in case of travel delays. A written list of all medications, supplements, and known allergies. Recent medical reports or test results relevant to your condition (blood work, imaging, specialist letters). This supports the intake assessment. See The Fazlani Screening Process.

Your health insurance card and emergency contact information. Travel insurance documentation. A letter from your physician confirming your fitness for travel, if you have significant health conditions (recommended for guests over 70 or those with complex medical histories).

For detailed guidance on medication considerations, see Herb-Drug Interaction Safety Guide.

Personal Care

What the Centre Provides

Fazlani provides basic toiletries, towels, and bed linen. The specific amenities may vary by room category. Treatment oils and herbal preparations are provided as part of the programme.

What to Bring

Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher). The Lonavala sun can be strong, especially from March to May. Insect repellent, particularly if visiting during or just after the monsoon season. Your preferred shampoo. You will need to wash oil from your hair frequently (daily during the oleation phase). A gentle, non-stripping shampoo works best. Some guests bring Shikakai or natural hair wash powder. A wide-toothed comb. Oil-saturated hair tangles easily and a wide-toothed comb prevents breakage. Lip balm. Minimal makeup (you will be undergoing facial treatments and oil therapies that make daily makeup impractical). Any prescription skincare. Contact lenses and supplies if applicable. Personal hygiene items.

What to Leave at Home

Strong perfumes or fragranced products. These can interfere with the therapeutic oils and may not be appreciated in the treatment environment. Harsh exfoliating products. Your skin will be receiving intensive oil therapy and does not need additional stimulation. Hair styling tools (straighteners, curling irons). Embrace the oil.

Technology and Entertainment

A phone and charger. India uses Type C, D, and M power outlets (230V). If coming from outside India, bring a universal adapter. A tablet or e-reader for reading during rest periods. A journal or notebook. Many guests find that recording their experience, symptoms, emotions, and insights during the programme is valuable. A small amount of offline entertainment (downloaded books, podcasts, music) for rest days.

The medical team recommends minimising screen time during the programme, especially in the evenings. The nervous system calming effects of Shirodhara and other therapies are enhanced by reduced digital stimulation. Many guests find this aspect of the programme surprisingly restorative.

Wi-Fi is available at the centre. Phone signal is generally adequate in the Lonavala area.

Practical Items

Passport and visa documentation (for international guests). Indian Rupees or an international debit/credit card. A small daypack or tote bag for carrying items around the property. A reusable water bottle. Staying hydrated is important during Panchakarma, especially during oleation and sudation therapies. A light rain jacket or umbrella if visiting during the monsoon season (June to September). Comfortable socks for cool mornings if visiting in winter. A sleep mask and earplugs if you are a light sleeper (though the property is generally very quiet). Any comfort items that help you relax (a favourite tea that does not conflict with your treatment, a meditation cushion, a small personal item).

Climate-Specific Packing

October to February (Cool Season)

Daytime temperatures are comfortable (20 to 28 degrees Celsius), and mornings and evenings can be cool (12 to 18 degrees Celsius). Bring a warm layer (light fleece, cardigan, or shawl) for mornings and evenings. A light blanket or warm sleeping layer if you feel cold easily.

March to May (Warm Season)

Daytime temperatures can reach 35 degrees Celsius. Light, breathable cotton clothing is essential. Bring extra sunscreen and a hat for any outdoor time.

June to September (Monsoon)

Heavy rainfall, high humidity, and lush greenery. Waterproof footwear or sandals that can get wet are essential. A light rain jacket or poncho. Quick-drying clothing. The humidity means clothes take longer to dry between washes.

What Not to Worry About

Many guests over-pack for Panchakarma. Here are things you do not need to worry about. Evening wear or restaurant-appropriate clothing: meals at Fazlani are served in a casual dining setting. Extensive reading material: the centre has common areas and the property offers walking trails. Snacks: the therapeutic diet is designed by the medical team and outside food is not recommended during the programme. Gifts for staff: while appreciated, these are not expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my clothes be ruined by the oil?

Medicated sesame oil and other treatment oils do stain fabric. Some staining is permanent, especially on light-coloured clothing. Bring older clothes or dark-coloured items you will not be upset about staining. The centre’s laundry service can handle oil-stained clothing, though some residual marking may remain.

Should I bring my own yoga mat?

The centre provides yoga equipment. Bringing your own mat is not necessary unless you have a strong personal preference.

Is there laundry service at the centre?

Yes. Laundry services are available. Given that you will change clothes frequently during the oleation phase, plan to use this service rather than packing for every day.

What about dietary supplements and herbal teas?

Bring any supplements you currently take so the medical team can review them during the intake consultation. Some may be paused during the programme. Personal herbal teas (chamomile, ginger, etc.) are generally fine, though check with the medical team to ensure they do not conflict with your prescribed protocol.

Do I need to bring old towels for my hair?

The centre provides towels. Designating one of the provided towels as your "oil towel" works well. Some guests bring a dark-coloured microfibre towel for this purpose, which is a practical option.

Is there a shop nearby if I forget something?

Lonavala town is a short drive from the centre and has pharmacies, general stores, and basic shopping. The centre staff can assist with purchasing essential items you may have forgotten.
